Anna Maria Barry-Jester, b. 1981, is a documentary photographer focusing on the social and political determinants of health.
Anna graduated from NYU with a degree in Latin American Studies in 2003. After working as a photo intern at the Village Voice, she went to work on public health initiatives in Latin America. Since then, she has worked on photographic essays in the United States and Latin America. Her work on Evangelical Christians in Nicaragua was featured in the 2007 Noorderlicht Exhibition Act of Faith. Anna is currently pursuing a Masters in Public Health at Columbia University, exploring the use of media for public health journalism, advocacy, and education.
Anna has lived in Argentina, Cuba, and Nicaragua for extended periods, and traveled to over 20 other countries. She has written for Utne award winning Connections magazine and Americas.org, and taught photography courses for high school students at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).
